BASiCS:
DiAL: Original Circa 1940 DOXA Military, UNaltered, UNrefinished! B+, 85 to 88 percent condition.
CASE: ALL Stainless Steel snapback, Hallmarked DOXA. A-, 95 percent condition. 38mm without crown, 44mm lug tip to lug tip lengthwise
MOVEMeNT: RaRE VALJOUX 22 (used for Military Chronographs by BREiTLiNG/HEUER/GALLET, etc.) manual wind. Stamped 'Doxa'. Just Serviced. Working condition 100 percent/Cosmetic condition 95 percent.
DOXA is a Swiss brand made famous three times. First, in the 40s where DOXA made some of the Highest Grade MiLiTARY Watches. Their German DOXA "DH" Ordnance WW2 watches are legendary. So are DOXA MiLiTARY Watches that were used by the ALLiES, such as this DOXA AiR Force/Naval MiLiTARY Chrono, Extremely similar to those made by BREiTLiNG and GALLET that were used by U.S. Naval and Air Force Dept. Officers in WW2.
The second coming of DOXA was during the 60s when, with the help of Jacques Cousteau, DOXA researched and then pioneered the now famous DOXA ORANGE DiAL DiVER (DOXA Diver) watch. The use of an Orange DiaL was heretical in the 60s, even though research by DOXA and Jacques Cousteau showed it was the most visible under H20. The DOXA orange has since become so popular it's a fad even on non-Dive watches.
The third coming of DOXA was as the watch in the CLiVE CuSSLER novels, used by DiRK PiTT. For the Unanointed, DiRK PiTT is...well, here's one encyclopedia's definition: "Dirk Eric Pitt is a renowned adventurer, a comparable blend of Indiana Jones, MacGyver and James Bond." Played by Matthew McConaughey in the films, the character was actually named after CLiVE CuSSLER's son. But back to the Doxa watch. Like 007's ROLEX (sorry Omega, it will always be ROLEX, and Sean Connery, for us), the Orange DOXA DiVER is a literary, and now film, icon.
The DOXA watch became part of the fabric of the Dirk Pitt character because CUSSLER worked in a Dive Shop while writing the first novel, all the time eyeing the amazing DOXA Diver. He got the DOXA for himself upon leaving the DiVE Shop and embarking on his now legendary literary career. The popularity and legend of DOXA grew as a result of the novels, resulting in an actual revival of the SWiSS company DOXA, and revival of the DOXA Diver model itself in the form of re-editions of the Original DOXA Diver watches.
BuT, the only thing arguably more Legendary than these DOXA Diver timepieces would be the actual DOXA WW2-issue MiLiTARY/NAVAL Valjoux 22 Chronograph presented here. I personally own (and will not sell) several German DOXA "DH" Bundeswher-issue watches. Tempted to keep this WW2 MiLiTARY Chrono, I had to deal with the realities of selling Vintage Timepieces, realizing you can't own 'em all.
As with BREiTLiNG and GALLET WW2-issue Chronographs, the DOXA Military Chronograph uses the Famous Valjoux 22, a favorite and exquisite chrono movement used in the Best of the Best 30-minute/45-minute PiLOT and NaVAL MiLiTARY chronographs of the period, on into the early 60s by some high-end watch producers. The Valjoux 22 in this DOXA WW2 MiLiTARY Chrono is iMMaCuLATE and has just been serviced by one of the top ROLEX/PATEK/high end Master Watchmakers in Los Angeles, who works for us as well as many area authorized dealers and collectors. That alone is at least a $250 expense at a decent facility.
The ALL-STeeL CaSE of this watch is HallMarked DOXA on the inside, and is virtually markless. Our expert watchmakers have carefully buffed it, and I would rate the case on this watch to be in A- condition. A- only because it is not totally new, and has touched a buffing wheel. It is a tight-fitting SnapBack that clicks into place like the day it was manufactured, on the eve of U.S. entry into WW2.
The Tan to reddish Gold, PuRE MiLiTARY DOXA DiaL is ORiGiNAL, as are the BLaCK STeeL hands and CLaSSiC Red Seconds Pointer. One might think this WW2 DOXA MiLiTARY CHRoNO was new, except for patina of time on the dial. I'd rate the DiaL at B+, 85 to 88 percent condition, with some spotting, and a smaller portion of the ‘telemeter’ scale at the very top of the dial faded off. For a 68-year-old Military Dial, any 68-year-old military dial, the shape of this DOXA is amazing. I personally avoid redialing watches at virtually all costs to preserve the collectibility of those pieces, especially with an Historically important piece such as this. This is not a collectible/historical Military Watch that has been ruined by a "made to look new Redial".
The Best part of this SLice of Time (okay, a pun) and History, is that it is virtually as Good as the day it was Minted. Our watchmakers have serviced the superb-condition movement to it's absolutely Original condition and specifications. This WW2 MiLiTARY DOXA Chrono is ready to wear and bring several more lifetimes of pleasure and coLLectibility to whoever owns it. As a note for those wondering why there are no military ordnance numbers on the caseback, as most watch collectors know, chronographs and other expensive timepieces in WW2 were basically private purchase timepieces because of their expense. This was true for all sides, British, German and U.S., though there were a few Flieger chronographs in the German Luftwaffe that did have specific military numbers on them.
This WW2 DOXA MiLiTARY Chronograph comes on a striking BREiTLiNG-style stitched black leather strap with steel buckle, ready for wear. While there are maybe a few DOXA chronographs of the period out there possibly in comparable condition, this is one of a very RaRE Breed! It is a FuLL MiLiTARY Chronograph by DOXA! FiRST OFF, YeSSS, that is a totaLLy ORiGiNAL DiAL, unRetouched, unRefinished, un AnyThinged but ORiGiNAL! That said...
I’ve gotten ouT of the TReNCHes with this VeRRRY RaRE OMEGA SOLiD GOLD WW2 RAF (Royal Air Force) OFFiCER’s Watch. A HuGE touch of ClaSS to the Rough and ReaDy MiLiTARies I usually go Bonkers over. As this watch is on Consignment, you can thank the BLoKe who’s selling it for the Overly Customer-Friendly Price...were this piece mine it would be close to $2000, still less than our LaLaLand Melrose Blvd. Watch Boutiques out here, and the prices they demand from their customers driving up in their Bentleys and Rolls’s.
This WW2 OMEGA MiLiTARY Watch is the GOLD Version of OMEGAs Issued to (and purchased privately as well in SteeL by) the RAF and other BriT Personnel during WW2 (samples of the non-Gold versions are in Wesolowski’s ‘Military Timepieces 1880-1990'). This Omega Military watch was clearly made for the UppeR Echelon, a Private Purchase MiLiTARY TimePiece for Officers, imbued with FuLL MiLiTARY Specs. But it had a Completely SOLiD 9ct GOLD Case (check the inside caseback pic below). As RaRE as the SteeL MiLiTARY Issues are these days, this Solid GOLD Officer’s OMEGA MiLiTARY Watch is RaReR still in Numbers produced.
Despite the LuXuRiaNT GOLD CASE, EVERYthing is PuRE MiLiTARY...’PURiTY of ESSeNCE’ to quote RAF OFFiCER, Group Captain (G/C) Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) from ‘Dr. StrangeLove.’ The Strap Bars are SOLiD (Yes, Solid Gold!). The Movement is the same Omega Manual 26.5 T2 Caliber in various Omega SteeL MiLiTARY Models. The ORiGiNAL UNrefinished SuPerB DiAL is FuLL-ON MiLiTARY with GLOW Numbers (of course they no longer Glow) and Original MiLiTARY GLOW Hands (again, no longer Glowin’). It has the MiLiTARY SubSeconds standard on ALL WW2 BriT (and other country) MiLiTARY Watches. The Omega movement Serial Number is in the 10 million, which dates to 1944, but it is likely this was made in 1945 with serial number in the later 10 millions.
The condition of this OMEGA is ReMaRKABLE, especially noteworthy in the Original DiaL which is as clean as an Omega coming out of the 70s or newer. The Movement shows Virtually NO Wear from Use or Servicings, and the SOLiD GOLD 31mm Case (not including Solid Gold Crown, which adds another few millimeters) is in Just Gorgeous Shape, I’d conservatively rate it a B++. I have two pix of the Back, one reflecting printed type to show how perfect the surface is. This piece has been fully serviced by our certified watchmakers, and is ready to go...on your wrist. Comes with a Brit WW2 Era Leather Strap (pictured with a one-piece canvas though for the pics), the exact Style that would have been supplied with this piece, though you’ll get a new one. eMail Us to buy!
